i was asked to create a backdrop and photobooth for the Hood River Middle School 8th grade promotion dance.  oh!  i can do that... i am a fan of keeping things simple.  i created a black and white backdrop with chalkboard paint (which has a great matte charcoal color to it) + a white chalk pen + overhead projector to get the type perfect.   i bought and made many fun props to add to the fun.

thank you so much for being such great kids!  full of energy, enthusiasm and charm.  good luck and congratulations!  i could not take a bad picture all night!

creative process:: backdrop

designing a backdrop for ohshoot!

my task was to create an organic feeling backdrop for a  high-school graduation party photobooth.  the style was to be a little bohemian-gypsie.  i thought... no problem, i love that style!  i was wrong.  it was very difficult for me to lock into any one idea and spent countless hours designing and then re-doing.  in the 11th hour, i had a plan and spent the better part of that day creating the final backdrop.  it turned out great!

here are some pictures of the process:

my first backdrop was on 1/2" ply and i covered it with burlap + painted it with watered down chalky blue paint.  the color was great, but i did not like the texture and how the burlap layed against the wood.  plus it was way too heavy! 




plan B:  modge podge the next piece piece of 1/4" ply.   i can actually carry this one myself which is important for transport.  i tore pieces of a gray dusty blue and glued them on... next i added a graphic design element with 'fancy' masking tape from the hardware store + filled in.  on the right is gold bias tape, screwed in because i liked the look and did not want to glue or staple...  the last layer was the organic and 3D look of the yellow flowers (which are placemats from pier1).  they are a perfect yellow with threads of silver and gold, also they have a nice ruffle around the edges.  love them.  

 


here i am in action the morning of the event.  i ALWAYS wait till the last minute.  sparks my creative energy to the level i need... but i loose too much sleep and need to fix this last minute issue i have.  
Ya... that is me with a drill!

finally, the day of the shoot has arrived.   all set up at location, with a little lounge next to the booth so the people waiting can have a seat and watch.  i also brought props- always a fun addition to any photobooth.  hats. feathers. headbands. necklaces and shawls all with a bohemian flair.  xoxo  jessica

obviously kids love face paint... i think adults would enjoy a painted face too!  well, at least i do. 
here are found images that inspired this new obsession.  i would enjoy very much to do a photobooth or a portrait session at an event with beautiful faces painted by yours truly.

peek-a-boo panels

I love the idea of painting a solid panel for an ohshoot backdrop.  Especially, in the windy Gorge!  I learned my lesson trying to hang a paper backdrop---- did NOT work.  I need somthing that can withstand the wind. 
I can see these peek-a-boo panels being custom crafted for birthday parties.  Even really fun weddings.  Well, any event for that matter. 

my friend Jennifer Mydock is a very talented artist.  Jennifer lives in Hawaii, and has been creating these amazing cartoon boards for friends and family.  Lucky them!  She has inspirered me to give it a go.  Take a look at the boards she has painted for birthday parties.  Soooo fun.

chalkboard feature wall

my first chalkboard wall at hennis kitchen and bar.   sarah morton-erasmus, the co-owner of henni's (a dearest friend) wrote this amazing irish proverb for the opening night of the annex dinning area... which is modern and amazing.

go to henni's and enjoy and amazing meal and check to see what the wall illustration will be.  it is currently a vintage illustration of washington state.  so cool. 

inspiration:  ACE hotel in portland.  our room had an amazing charcoal gray wall + an organic illustration.

Ohshoot! is making sweet cherries! 

armed with paper, scissors and hot glue... little cherry props have been constructed.  crowns + cherry garland + giant paper blossoms, and giant round red balloons.
